Blue Valentine review

Blue Valentine is not a movie to take your girlfriend. Unless her favorite book is 1984 and she slows down to watch car wrecks, you’re better off with 500 Days of Summer. That is if you want to watch a film about disintegrating relationships, choose the one where Minka Kelly is happily waiting for you at the end. Blue Valentine is no Minka-Kelly-happily-waiting-for-you-at-the-end.

A Cautious Resolve

This new year I have made the usual resolutions I never seem to accomplish completely. As I sit here with Patty Griffin's "Coming Home to Me" playing in the background, I feel good. I may never get passed the first draft of my novel. I may stay in the same funk I've waded in and out of last year. But maybe not. Maybe instead of the 39 books I read in 2009, I'll read 50. Maybe I'll be able to pay off my car and save for New Zealand in 2011. Maybe I'll be braver. Kinder. More hopeful.

It's too soon to say whether this month is going towards or away from these goals. In any case, I'm going to try.

No more Hulu. I need the real thing.

Why has my decision to nix cable come back to bite me in the ass? I could be watching this right now, people!

Also, I know I'm thoroughly enjoying Community and Glee, but I need more mindless television selections. My current internet provider is kind of like the buffer in NPH's Dr. Horrible blog...ooh, Castle!

Per my sister's request I will post a new entry into this blog. Since she is one of two people that actually follow this blog (hi Mark!) then I will acquiesce to her request.

Ringing in the new year...whaddya mean it's almost March?

I started this blog in 2007 with 7 posts. 2008: 21 posts. If I had planned it better, I would have posted less in '08, making this entry the first in the nine-part series of 2009. Oh well, hindsight, right?

I am now a married woman. As I'm typing this a gentle wafting of potatoes and pot roast pervades the room. A frilly apron is tied around my waist. And I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my husband so that I can hang up his coat and hat whilst vacuuming and arranging flowers. No, wait. That was the TV.

I will still be eating pot roast though, darn it. Nothing terribly exciting is going on, but I did watch a nice little clip yesterday that reminded me of my childhood.

There was no Huey Lewis and the News last night, but some excellent moments, Schwartz's response from my last post's question on why Chuck and Sarah could never be, a Karate Kid reference and an episode close with Bon Iver's "Skinny Love". What's not to love?

The answer to that and many more increasingly awesome questions and one-liners lies in last night's episode of Chuck. Besides gushing about the well-placed Huey Lewis and the News, the two OC-esque references (an appearance by Melinda Clarke and the 80s music video hot girl crawling towards the camera like one Taylor Townsend in Season Four) and Lester's Wheel of MisFortune, we also get to see the nice Chuck/Sarah progression. Which, let's face it. Their obstacles are no Buffy/Angel. Get 'em together, Schwartz!

My TV complacency is high. Thank goodness I have this and Pushing Daisies.
